Consumer Rights (Part 3)
Right to REDRESS
It makes no sense having all the above rights by themselves. The whole purpose of being endowed with such rights would be entirely futile if there were no solutions for defective merchandise and consumer complaints. Accordingly your right to redress provides a gateway for some satisfactory consumer solution. Here in T&T redress means:
- A repair of the item, if it can be repaired
- A replacement of the item, if the above is not possible
- A refund of money if neither of the above is possible
Redress is usually offered in the order listed above.
Right to CONSUMER EDUCATION
2020 status as per government objectives is a better educated population across the board. Consumer education is a component of that broad perspective. The Consumer Affairs Division of the Ministry of Legal Affairs is enjoined with other consumer agencies to bring consumer education to the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. There is a dedicated unit in the ministry whose core function is to educate consumers about their rights and, equally important, about their responsibilities. To this end the ministry conducts outreach sessions to various NGOs, CBOs, schools, PTAs and other target groups. Free literature is also available to consumers in the form of brochures on:
- Other Consumer Protections Agencies
- Consumer Rights & Responsibilities
- Balance Parcel
- Redress
- Warranty
- Investigation of Consumer Complaints
- Financial Services
Remember, the power is yours!
