CONSUMER RIGHTS

Right of REDRESS

If you have a problem with a product you have purchased do not assume you can automatically get your money back. Yes, you're entitled to redress. The normal remedies are:

  • Repair of the item (if it can be repaired), or
  • Exchange of the item, or
  • Refund of your money

Suppliers usually offer redress in the order listed.

Right to SAFETY

Consumers purchase goods for their needs and wants. Goods must be of merchantable quality and be safe for both adults and children to use. For example:

  • The body, door or handle of a fridge should not shock
  • The motor or the cord of a fan should not catch afire
  • A toy must not contain toxic substances

Right to COMPLAIN

Consumer goods are produced mostly by machines or hand, and/or delivered with some human input. Under the best quality control production/delivery process, a product may still be sold or delivered with visible or invisible defects. Consumers have a right to complain about faulty merchandise. This means:

  • Do not remain silent about a defect
  • Make a note of the date of your oral complaint
  • Follow up your verbal complaint in writing
  • Copy your letter of complaint to the Consumer Affairs Division

Right to INFORMATION

Price is just one piece of information with which to make a decision to buy. Consumers should inquire about store policies such as returns, exchanges, warranties, delivery times and Hire Purchase - a very common contract too many consumers enter into without their realizing the seriousness of the document they have signed. This means you should:

  • Ask questions before you buy
  • Share information with other consumers
  • Contact the Consumer Affairs Division and other consumer protection agencies for more information

Right of CHOICE

It is your purchase, no one else's. Even though you may seek advice about a product you want or need, do not let others deny you your right to choose. But choose wisely and shop within your means. This means:

  • Plan your purchase
  • Shop around before you buy
  • Do not overspend

Remember, you can always change your mind, and not buy.

Remember, the power is yours!
