A Consumer’s Guide to a Safe Carnival
The month of January is here and we are moving full speed ahead into Carnival preparations and celebrations. The masquerade bands (mas bands) are finalizing their presentations; the music for the season is played on the radio stations; the gyms are filled with people getting in shape for their skimpy or not so skimpy costumes, and the parties start to build up to the big day. For those of us who take part in the Carnival celebrations in one way or the other, here are a few tips to make sure you get the most out of Carnival:
- Keep aware, pick pockets will be attracted to the large crowds;
- Keep hold of all your property, especially whilst traveling;
- Feel your best by keeping fluid levels up and drinking plenty of water;
- Make sure you eat before you travel to the Carnival;
- Wear comfortable shoes as you may be on your feet all day;
- Purchase tickets directly from promoters or advertised authorized agents;
- Pay attention to exclusion clauses or other terms and conditions that may be printed on the ticket;
- For your safety and peace of mind enquire whether promoters have purchased Public Liability Insurance;
- Familiarize yourself with all exists early. This will facilitate ease of exit in emergencies;
- Be selective in your choice of functions. Pay close attention to past experiences of overcrowding and poor security arrangements;
- Masqueraders should make every effort to collect and try on costumes before Carnival to ensure proper fit and allow time for any necessary adjustments;
- Enquire about security arrangements provided by the bands, since in some cases security charges are included in the cost of your costume;
- It is advisable that patrons, particularly women, attend Carnival functions in groups;
- Report all incidents of harassment immediately to the nearest police or security personnel;
- Take along home-prepared snacks and foodstuffs to reduce the risk of contracting food-borne diseases. If you must purchase food, do so only from vendors who display a valid food handler's badge. Observe whether the places where food is prepared are sanitary and have running water. BUY FROM SAFE SOURCES;
- Lodge an official complaint if you believe your legal rights have been violated. It is the only way that problems can be corrected and improvements made; and
- Pay special attention to traffic and motor vehicle regulations during the Carnival season. Desist from traveling in trays of pick-ups, overloading vehicles and other such activities. This can endanger your health and safety.
Be cool;
Be safe;
Be happy.
Remember, the power is yours!
