Labels - A Guide to Consumers
Every label tells a story. Reading labels is a good way to get information on what you buy.
A wise shopper reads, understands and uses the information on these labels.
Labels on pre-packaged food provide factual information to help you make better choices in today's market place.
Pre-packaged products are dived into two groups:-
NON-FOOD PRODUCTS - e.g. shampoos, toothpaste and detergents
FOOD PRODUCTS - e.g. nuts and juices
Labels on both Non-Food and Food products must show:-
- The common or generic name of the product - e.g. Lipstick
- The brand name or trademark of the product - e.g. Everglow Lipstick
- The net quantity of the contents in the package - e.g. 10 grams
- The name and address of manufacturer
- A list of ingredients in descending order of proportion
In addition, for Food products, labels should also show:-
- Storage conditions
- Expiry or "best before" dates (Remember "best before" indicates that the food may not be at peak quality but may still be edible)
- Number of servings and nutritional value
