PRINCIPLES AND PRIORITIES OF CONSUMER POLICY:

N. WOMEN AS CONSUMERS

  1. Principles
    1. Women comprise the largest group of consumers, buying both for themselves and for their families. Women should, therefore, play a leading role in establishing and influencing consumer trends.
  2. Priorities
    1. To facilitate participatory research in which women themselves identify their needs and concerns;
    2. To involve women in the national and regional decision making process;
    3. To encourage networking links between women's organization and other groups such as the university, environmentalists, trade unions and development agencies which will facilitate access to and exchange of information on consumer issues;
    4. To encourage the development of countervailing economic power by providing alternatives, such as cooperatives and alternate technologies, including the use of additional medicines;
    5. To eliminate discriminatory and unscrupulous marketing practices especially targeted at women.
