Consumer Policy for Trinidad and Tobago
OBJECTIVES OF POLICY
- to devise and promote measures for the effective protection against products, production processes and services which are hazardous to life and health;
- to promote measures to counteract threats to tile economic interests of consumers, in order to protect effectively fraudulent practices relating to the provision of goods and services;
- to promote measures which would enable consumers to obtain satisfactory, speedy and effective settlement of just claims at minimal costs;
- to ensure provision of measures for the fair distribution and pricing of essential goods and services;
- to promote adequate consumer education programmes, especially in schools, which would enable the individual to acquire the knowledge and problem-solving skills to become an informed and assertive consumer;
- to encourage the development of channels to provide consultation and representation of consumer interest, with a view to their receiving full and sympathetic consideration in the formulation and execution of economic or other policies;
- to strengthen the role of public agencies, as well as non-governmental agencies and the media, in consumer affairs;
- to establish a decentralized system of consumer services in all areas which will adequately fulfill the immediate needs of consumers;
- to promote harmonization, coordination and collaboration among all consumer protection agencies with a view to providing an integrated consumer service;
- to encourage greater mutual cooperation and assistance at the regional and international level with respect to matters affecting consumers;
- to facilitate research on matters of concern and interest to consumers; and
- to promote measures to protect the consumers interests in the following specific areas.
